On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays we wake up to find two pints of milk sitting on our doorstep.
This makes me happy. I love the pampered feeling I get when other people take care of my chores for me.
Because we opted for the organic milk, they're in these prosaic little cardboard cartons. If we'd opted for the regular milk, though, we'd get cute little glass bottles with shiny foil lids. Almost, but not quite, worth the risk of having a serving of antibiotics in our tea.
The fact that we order our milk by the pint indicates the slightly uneasy relationship that the UK seems to have with the metric system. The form we fill out when we order asks us how many pints we want. But when our cartons arrive, they don't say "one pint" on them. Instead, each one is labelled as "548 ml", because, you see, the UK doesn't use pints anymore. I really think they should take the plunge and just sell the stuff by the half-litre; it sort of takes away from the "easy to use" aspect of the metric system if you're working with odd numbers like "548".
