During the car trip this weekend, we listened to book on tape - The Giver, by Lois Lowry - that had all five of us absolutely riveted. Listening to the book, and the discussion it sparked, made the miles fly by.

Sophie asked me to find out if there was a sequel, so I had a look online, and stumbled across this site. I was astounded to read that this is a book which parents frequently lobby to have removed from school libraries. Reading some of the objections, it seems clear to me that either these parents haven't read the book, or, if they have read it, they are so staggeringly stupid that they have managed to miss its entire point. Pretty depressing, either way.
