There's so much hatred percolating through the world that I feel dizzy and sick. Those abuses of Iraqi prisoners ... I cannot fathom a mindset where people are treated like animals. It's only possible to do that if you don't believe that the person you're abusing is - well - a person. A person with a family, with friends, a person with likes and dislikes, a person who's someone's child. I'm afraid of people with no empathy; of people who, if they ever knew the difference between right and wrong, have forgotten it. And I believe that the sickness is not just confined to the dozen or so people we've seen in the photos that have been released thus far. For that kind of stuff to be happening, there has to be at least implicit consent higher up. God only knows what awful things are in the photos and videos that haven't been released yet. And here's another thought. If those kind of atrocities are happening in Abu Ghraib, what's going on in Guantanamo, where the level of secrecy is so much higher? What kind of things are happening to all those people who've been detained without so much as a trial?
The actions of those soldiers have just added fuel to the fire. People who were already angry and bitter and hate-filled will now be even further incensed. The repercussions are already being felt. I almost couldn't breathe when I read this awful story, I felt so sick and tired and sad and angry.
